Cyclists test their pedal and brain power as they raise funds for a fantastic cause

Heroic cyclists put their muscles and their brain power to the test as they hit the road to raise funds for a fantastic cause.

More than 40 fundraisers saddled up to take part in the Florence’s Heroes Cycle Ride which set off from the Queen’s Head.

The intrepid riders had to answer quiz questions and solve clues to discover the location of the next pub. Then off they went from pub to pub collecting points, prizes and forfeits along the way.

The challenge took the teams along a 30 mile route returning to a warm welcome from our staff here for drinks, food and prize presentations.

In all, more than £2,600 was raised for Florence’s Heroes, a charitable fund created by Chris and Sarah Wheat in honour of their daughter, Florence.

Florence was born six weeks early in 2015 and was diagnosed with hydrocephalus and congenital heart defects. She spent the first 104 days of her life in three different hospitals.

The Florence’s Heroes Fund was created to show appreciation for the exceptional care she received and to support the Neonatal Unit at Colchester Hospital, the Acute Neonatal Transfer Service and the Royal Brompton Hospital in London.

Sarah and Chris said: “It was a great day and thanks to everyone who took part.

“Big thanks to Lisa and Steve at the Queens Head – brilliant as always. We have raised over £2,683 for Florence’s Heroes with every penny going to the charities.”
